First off- it’s NOT A DIET!! It’s a lifestyle approach to how we eat our food. So what exactly does that mean? For me, it means enjoying the good and limiting the bad. It’s something I try to do on a regular basis. During the week I try to “eat clean”. Meaning that stick to food in its simplest state.
Not sure what I mean? Here’s my outlook on what I deem “clean”. If I can answer YES to these questions, then I know I’m good:
- Can I grow this?
- Can I hunt this? ( sorry animals )
- Will this die/does it have a shelf life?
- Does it have 5 ingredients or less?
- Can I pronounce all of the ingredients AND find them in my cupboard or know where to find them?
For the most part it’s pretty simple. Veggies, fruits and lean sources of protein (animal and plant) all check the box for “clean items” on my list. Stuff like cookies, white bread, chips, and soda don’t . Does this mean I NEVER indulge? Absolutely not. I’m human and I believe everything in moderation. I just don’t make a habit of eating these things all the time. If I’m trying to keel it clean, I stick to simple foods that aren’t highly processed.
For me it helps make life easier as I don’t have to think much beyond baking or grilling a couple of things. I like knowing that I’m not filling my body with chemicals or foreign ingredients it doesn’t know how to process or use.
